How We Score
Effective: April 4, 2026 | The New Atlantis Corporation
Our Approach
Verafy uses patent-pending product intelligence technology to help consumers understand what is in the products they buy. Every product is evaluated through an ingredient-level analysis that cross-references each component against classifications published by regulatory authorities worldwide.
How It Works
When a product is analyzed, Verafy examines its ingredient list and evaluates each ingredient against regulatory databases. The system accounts for the fact that ingredients are generally listed in descending order of concentration — ingredients appearing earlier in the list are present in higher amounts.
Each ingredient is checked for regulatory classifications such as restrictions, bans, required warnings, and concentration limits assigned by the authorities listed below.
Regulatory Sources
Verafy cross-references ingredient data against classifications from 25 regulatory authorities across 16 jurisdictions, including:
- FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) — GRAS list, food additive regulations
- EU CLP Regulation — Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances
- ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) — REACH restrictions and authorizations
- California Proposition 65 — chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm
- EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) — food additive re-evaluations
- Health Canada — Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, food additives
- TGA (Australia Therapeutic Goods Administration) — restricted ingredients
Plus 18 additional regulatory sources covering cosmetics, household chemicals, supplements, and pet products.
The Maat Scale
Products are scored on The Maat Scale, which translates regulatory analysis into a simple A-through-F grade:
| Grade | Score | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| A | 80-100 | Excellent — minimal regulatory concerns |
| B | 60-79 | Good — minor concerns identified |
| C | 40-59 | Moderate — some concerns present |
| D | 20-39 | Poor — multiple concerns identified |
| F | 0-19 | Avoid — serious regulatory concerns |
Verification
Verafy independently verifies product data against government databases and accredited third-party sources. Products displaying the "Verified" badge have been confirmed by at least one independent source. Our verification layer draws from 592,818 records across 13 independent sources.
What Scores Are and Are Not
Scores reflect regulatory classification data. They are not medical diagnoses, therapeutic recommendations, or guarantees of safety. Individual sensitivities vary. Always consult a healthcare professional for health-related decisions.
